Sodhi and Blundell named in New Zealand World Cup squad

Ish Sodhi and Tom Blundell have claimed the two uncertain spots in New Zealand's World Cup squad with the 15 names being confirmed in Christchurch on Wednesday.

The roles of the second spinner and reserve keeper had the most debate attached to them with Sodhi being preferred to fellow legspinner Todd Astle and Blundell, who is uncapped in ODIs, earning a late call-up following an injury to Tim Seifert.

The rest of the squad, the first for the ten competing nations to be confirmed, is very much as expected with the shape of the World Cup party having largely taken shape since Gary Stead took over from Mike Hesson as coach.

Colin Munro keeps his place although is likely to find himself as the reserve batsman with Henry Nicholls slated to open alongside Martin Guptill. Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme have taken the seam-bowling allrounder spots with Mitchell Santner, who has recovered from knee surgery, set to be the main spinner.

"As with any squad named for a major tournament, there's had to be some tough calls and there will be some disappointed players," coach Gary Stead said. "The key for us was finding the right balance for the squad and making sure we had our bases covered for what is going to be a very competitive World Cup. As a one-day unit, we've been pretty consistent over the past few years and possess a very experienced group of core players, proven at the top level.

"The World Cup is the pinnacle of cricket and to be the first nation to name a squad for the tournament is really exciting. I'd like to congratulate all the players selected. To represent your country at a World Cup is a huge honor and I know the entire squad and support staff are looking forward to the challenges ahead."

The squad will have a series of two-day training camps in Christchurch later in April before heading to Australia for a trip that includes three unofficial one-day matches. A large number of the World Cup squad won't be present for that tour as they are at the IPL so a collection of reserve players will be included.

"We will have three training camps through April which will involve many players who are not in this squad as it's important they're ready on standby should we lose anybody in the lead up to or at the tournament," Stead said.

Squad Kane Williamson (capt), Martin Guptill, Henry Nicholls, Ross Taylor, Tom Latham, Colin Munro, Tom Blundell, Jimmy Neesham, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult

Gautam Gambhir says: India Should Be Ready To Forfeit Pakistan Match

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has to have a firm stand on cricketing relations with Pakistan. Gautam Gambhir, who was speaking to reporters on the side of a promotional event, stressed that BCCI should either snap all cricketing ties with Pakistan, including multi-lateral events or engage with the arch-rivals at every level as "there can't be conditional bans". Gambhir had been vocal about snapping all cricketing ties with Pakistan after the Pulwama terror attack and said that cricket board has to decide and be prepared for the consequences.

Gautam Gambhir

"There can't be conditional bans. Either you ban everything with Pakistan or open everything with Pakistan. What has happened in Pulwama is absolutely not acceptable," Gambhir said.

"I am sure it's going to be difficult for India to boycott them in ICC tournaments but stop playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup," said the left-hander.

Gambhir reiterated that there should be a blanket ban on engagement with Pakistan even if it comes at the cost of being ostracised by the sporting community.

The BCCI had appealed to the ICC to snap ties with countries from where terror-emanates in a veiled reference to Pakistan. But the request was turned down at the ICC board meeting in Dubai.

Gambhir cited England's forfeiture of their 2003 World Cup round-robin fixture against Zimbabwe in protest of the Robert Mugabe regime.

"England decided in 2003 and they wouldn't go to Zimbabwe, they forfeited. If BCCI decides not to play against Pakistan, everyone should be mentally ready to give those two points," he said.

"There could be repercussions and we may not qualify for the semi-finals. No media should blame the Indian team if they plan to boycott playing Pakistan," he said.

Asked what should be done if the two teams meet in the final, Gambhir said in that case, India should forfeit the final.

"Two points are not that important. A country is important, those 40 soldiers who lost their lives are far more important than a cricket match. If we let go of a World Cup final, the country should be ready for it," Gambhir said.

Asked if India's stand could lead to a sporting boycott of the nation in the near future, Gambhir said that he wouldn't mind that.

"All of us need to decide if the sport is more important or lives of our soldiers? I am all for facing a backlash if the international sporting federations decide to ostracize us. The sentiment of the country is far more important than sports, Bollywood, art or culture," he said

India Women Lose 3rd T20I By 1 Run

Despite a wonderful 50 by Smriti Mandhana, India women lost the 3rd and final T20 International by a solitary run in a last-ball thriller in Guwahati as Eng women completed a 3-0 whitewash on Saturday. After opting to bat, Eng managed to score 119 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Chasing the small target, India looked in a comfortable position as Smriti Mandhana smashed 58 off 39 balls, including eight boundaries and a 6. Leading run-scorer in women's 1 day International cricket, Mithali Raj took the charge of the team's run-chase after the departure of Mandhana.

However, the experienced batswoman failed to shoulder the responsibility when India needed three runs in the last over with 6 wickets in hand. In the end, Mithali Raj was unbeaten 4 boundaries in her 32-ball knock.

Kate Cross led the bowling attack for Eng with two wickets in the final over. She dismissed Bharati Fulmali and Anuja Patil for 5 and 0 respectively in consecutive deliveries of the last over.
