Ladies' golf push into an appreciated spotlight

Jennifer Kupcho's

As Augusta minutes go, Jennifer Kupcho's effective birdie putt over the last green was straight up there.

Close to the 21-year-old from Wake Forest finishing the 67 that gave her a four-stroke triumph, she was splashed in champagne. That well known old eighteenth green had never observed the like.

Also, those air pockets gave a fittingly celebratory state of mind to what appeared a leap forward day for ladies' golf.

Since, not exclusively did the debut Augusta National Women's Amateur demonstrate a major hit, on the opposite side of the world the Jordan Mixed Open at the Ayla Golf Club demonstrated a consolidated male and female competition can likewise work.

England's Meghan MacLaren was second in a field where individuals from the Ladies European Tour took on their partners from the Challenge and seniors' circuits.

Here at Augusta, there was no cleaning the grin from the faces each of the 30 of the golfers who rose up out of the initial two days of rivalry to be capable play the last round at the home of the men's Masters.

Extensive exhibitions pursued the activity, producing a progressively polished in any case, on occasion, similarly, enthusiastic climate to the one saw when a green coat is available to all.

The players instructed colossal regard. Ground-breaking drives were joined by cries of "goodness" and "for mercy's sake" as the youthful beginners caught their first chance to contend on this praised course.

There was a feeling of history being made at a club which did not concede female individuals until just seven years back. Truly, this was not a ladies' Masters, however, it was a critical advance for a game that, finally, is beginning to perceive the estimation of decent variety.

"I've played in huge groups previously, Curtis Cups and things like that however notwithstanding when we were hitting tee-shots out there we were getting commended," Northern Ireland's Olivia Mehaffy revealed to BBC Sport.

"What's more, you could hear the general population around resembling 'hold up!' Maybe they didn't know what we can do.

"I mean we hit it far, we hit it great and we can hit those shots around the greens and opening those putts. I believe it's unique for them to get the chance to observe that."

Mehaffey, who shot a four-over-standard 76 to complete 23rd, said the way toward enduring the initial two rounds at the adjacent Champions Retreat course had been totally nerve-wracking.

"I've never felt that sort of weight," she said. "You play week in, week out to make the cut and that is a typical thing yet to play for the cut and have this on the opposite side that was only a totally unique ball game."

Mehaffey included: "This is enormous, it opens up such a large number of entryways."

She was one of two UK players to make the last 30 ready to play the end round at Augusta. Berkhamsted's Alice Hewson checked a dimension standard 72 regardless of twofold coming up short the last to complete in an offer of the tenth spot.

"I had an extremely extraordinary time out there," the 21-year-old let me know. "The climate was staggering.

"It's an incredibly extraordinary chance and nobody else would persuade that opportunity to be in the initial 30 ladies to play here. I'm ridiculously thankful that I had the capacity to be around here this week and play well."

The feature was holding an extensive birdie putt at the standard five fifteenth. "That was simply mind-blowing," she said.

"The thunders originating from the individuals who could see it on 16, all down the fifteenth fairway and having my entire family here to have the capacity to watch was likewise great. It was from off the green as well, so it was possibly 25, 30 feet."

Hewson plans to turn proficient in the not so distant future and her Augusta experience should stand her in great stead. "I think it is an extraordinary certainty developer and a decent structure obstruct for what is to come," she said.

One year from now she could be having her spot in a field where she will be facing male partners. The Jordan Mixed Open recommends there is some mileage in putting people in similar competitions.

Fears that an evenhanded course set-up might demonstrate unimaginably were alleviated with an entirely equivalent spread of players making the cut from the three voting public that made up the field.

At one phase MacLaren held a five-stroke lead yet was chased down on the back nine by the men's Challenge Tour player Daan Huizing.

The LET and the oldies from the Staysure Tour, through Jose Coceres, were both spoken to in the best four.

MacLaren, an intense promoter for the ladies' amusement, unquestionably given her clubs a chance to do the talking. At 14 under-standard she was seven shots in front of any of the other female contenders.

This has been an end of the week in which ladies' golf has been pushed into an appreciated spotlight. The incongruity is that it has been not been done through the principal major of the year, the ANA Inspiration, which still has one day to go.
